Our Tracker says...

January brought significant developments in the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup garnered attention for its cost-effective AI models. Executives from major tech companies, including Alphabet, AMD, Palantir, and Amazon, discussed DeepSeek's innovations during earnings calls, acknowledging its potential to drive efficiency and wider AI adoption. While some concerns were raised about DeepSeek's development practices and competitive impact, the overall sentiment remained optimistic, with leaders anticipating leveraging similar advancements within their organizations.(businessinsider.com)

In the world of return-to-office (RTO) policies, January saw significant mandates. Amazon implemented a five-day office mandate starting January 2, 2025, with the goal of enhancing in-person collaboration. Similarly, President Donald Trump signed an executive order enforcing RTO for all federal employees, emphasizing the importance of on-site work. These mandates have sparked discussions about the balance between in-office and remote work, with considerations around employee preferences, productivity, organizational efficiency and culture.(unleash.ai)(forbes.com)

The Five Eyes: Noteworthy Developments in January

In January 2025, the Five Eyes nations—Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States—experienced notable developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and return-to-office (RTO) policies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI):

  • United States: The Biden administration introduced new export controls on AI-related chips to prevent adversaries, particularly China, from acquiring advanced technology for military purposes. The policy grants unrestricted access to 20 allied nations while requiring licenses for others. The semiconductor industry expressed concerns that these restrictions might hinder U.S. economic interests and global competitiveness. (ft.com)
  • Australia: Australia is positioning itself as a significant player in the AI sector, inspired by the success of China's DeepSeek model, which demonstrated that top-tier AI can be developed affordably. Australian AI innovation, exemplified by JJ Fiasson's Leonardo Ai acquired by Canva, showcases potential with limited means. To foster AI research, Leonardo Ai has partnered with the University of Technology Sydney, initiating a doctorate program in areas like safety and bias in generative AI. Atlassian is also developing Tech Central, a Silicon Valley-like hub in Sydney, aiming to consolidate top Australian talent(theaustralian.com.au)

Return-to-Office (RTO) Policies:

  • United States: Dell announced the end of its hybrid and remote work model, requiring employees living within an hour of a Dell office to return to working in the office five days a week starting from March 3. CEO Michael Dell communicated the policy via an email, citing the inefficiency of prolonged digital communication compared to quick in-person interactions. However, employees residing far from Dell offices will be allowed to continue remote work but will face restrictions on promotions unless approved by senior leadership. (businessinsider.com)
  • United Kingdom: The return to work after the festive season in the UK proved challenging, with large employers ending hybrid working arrangements and requiring more in-office attendance. Companies like Amazon and BT mandated stricter office presence policies, with Amazon demanding in-person attendance five days a week. This move led to tensions between employees and management, who argue that physical presence fosters better collaboration and creativity.
